That same aggressiveness is its main problem when it invades areas where we do not want to see it: bentgrass greens, fine tee boxes, bunker edges or planted beds. Once established, driving it out costs far more than containing it in time.

In this article we review five management tricks to control its invasion, from edge prevention to organising the work. There are no magic solutions: it comes down to consistency, good judgement and a realistic calendar. Stolons creep across the surface and root as soon as they find a gap, so the most effective defence is a clean line maintained throughout the whole season.

Define clearly the boundary between this species and the area that must be protected.

Cut the edge regularly using an edger or a trimmer, leaving a small separation channel.

Remove the clippings from the edges: fragments can root elsewhere.

This task seems minor, but it prevents the most problems. A well-kept edge is far cheaper than recovering an invaded green. A typical example: on a course with mixed bermudagrass and kikuyu, the team that tidies the tee box edges every two weeks almost never has to lift sod, while the one that does it once a year ends up rebuilding whole corners every spring. The difference lies in frequency, not force.

Trick 2: Use Physical Barriers and Durable Separations

Where pressure is constant, a barrier helps. These can be buried curbing, rigid sheets sunk into the soil or separation trenches with inert material. The barrier must be deep enough to stop the rhizomes and sit at the right level so it does not interfere with machines.

Check the barriers periodically: stolons can pass over them if organic matter or sand has built up. A good practice is to go over the edge after each sanding or aeration, because those operations can leave bridges of material that the invasive grass uses to cross. It is also worth checking that greens machines do not carry stolon fragments from one area to another: cleaning the reels and grass boxes when changing holes is a simple step that avoids unwittingly spreading the problem, and costs the team just a few minutes.

Buried barrier containing kikuyu on a tee box

Trick 3: Adjust Mowing and Fertilising to Slow Its Push

This species responds strongly to nitrogen, heat and generous irrigation. If you over-fertilise close to sensitive areas, you encourage its advance. Moderate fertilising at the edges and concentrate it where you want density.

Mow frequently, at low height and with well-sharpened blades, in the transition zone.

Avoid excessive irrigation on the margins, which invites kikuyu to advance.

Adjust fertilising according to soil tests and the real needs of each area.

The aim is not to weaken kikuyu where it is useful, as on fairways and rough, but to prevent surplus from pushing it into places where it should not be.

Trick 4: Selective, Localised Treatments, Always with Advice

When mechanical control is not enough, some selective treatments can be part of the plan. Without going into products or rates, three ideas are worth remembering: their effectiveness depends heavily on timing and on the condition of the kikuyu, they can affect the species you want to protect, and they should only be applied following the label, current regulations and the advice of an authorised technician.

It is preferable to act locally on small, well-identified patches rather than treat large areas. Try first on a small area, watch how the turf responds and keep a record of when, where and how it was done. If it comes back, what is probably missing is edge work and management, not more product.

Sod repair of a patch invaded by kikuyu

Trick 5: Repair Invaded Areas Quickly and Restore the Desired Turf

When invasion has already happened, act without delay. Remove the invasive turf deeply enough to include the rhizomes, and replace it with sod or seed of the right species. If you leave roots, it will sprout again within a few weeks.

Mark the affected area and a margin around it, because what is visible is usually less than what is really there.

Prepare the soil and ensure good contact of the new material.

Watch the repair for several weeks and cut new shoots from day one.

On greens and tee boxes, this repair must be done carefully so as not to leave irregularities that affect play. Once finished, protect the edge with tricks 1 and 2 so the problem does not return.

How to Organise Kikuyu Control Through the Season

Kikuyu grows mainly with heat, so the periods of greatest vigilance coincide with spring, summer and early autumn. A simple calendar avoids improvisation: edge checks every few weeks, going over barriers after aeration, controlling irrigation on margins and a monthly round of critical areas.

Share out the tasks, note what was done and where, and mark on a plan the points where kikuyu reappears most strongly. You will see that some problem areas recur; with that knowledge you can reinforce the edges there and reduce effort elsewhere. Good records turn the fight against kikuyu into predictable work and not a string of emergencies.
<rect width="720" height="528" rx="6" class="svg-dark"/><text x="28" y="44" class="svg-tw">Key takeaways</text><line x1="28" y1="58" x2="120" y2="58" class="svg-line2"/><rect x="24" y="76" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="58" y="130.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">1</text><text x="90" y="129" class="svg-c">Cut the kikuyu edge regularly</text><rect x="372" y="76" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="406" y="130.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">2</text><text x="438" y="119" class="svg-c">Use buried barriers where</text><text x="438" y="139" class="svg-c">pressure is strong</text><rect x="24" y="184" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="58" y="238.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">3</text><text x="90" y="227" class="svg-c">Moderate nitrogen and</text><text x="90" y="247" class="svg-c">irrigation on the margins</text><rect x="372" y="184" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="406" y="238.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">4</text><text x="438" y="227" class="svg-c">Treat only with the label and</text><text x="438" y="247" class="svg-c">an authorised adviser</text><rect x="24" y="292" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="58" y="346.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">5</text><text x="90" y="335" class="svg-c">Repair quickly, including</text><text x="90" y="355" class="svg-c">rhizomes and stolons</text><rect x="372" y="292" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="406" y="346.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">6</text><text x="438" y="335" class="svg-c">Keep a monitoring calendar in</text><text x="438" y="355" class="svg-c">the warm months</text><rect x="24" y="400" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="58" y="454.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">7</text><text x="90" y="443" class="svg-c">Record the points where it</text><text x="90" y="463" class="svg-c">reappears</text>
Further reading: STRI Group.
