But even the most widespread practice should not be applied without thinking. Watering at night has clear benefits, and also risks that show up as disease, persistent moisture and breakdowns that nobody sees in time.

Here we review five benefits and three risks of night irrigation, with examples from the course and recommendations for adjusting the schedule of each sector. In a Mediterranean summer, watering at midday means losing a significant share to evaporation and drift. At night, that loss is noticeably reduced, and every cubic metre is better used.

This is particularly valuable where water is expensive, scarce or subject to restrictions. Efficient irrigation is, above all, irrigation that reaches the root.

There is an important nuance: the reduction in losses is real, but it does not justify over-watering. If the soil is already close to field capacity, extra volume will only turn into percolation or runoff, whatever time it is applied. Knowing the rooting depth and soil texture of each sector avoids that very common mistake.

Benefits 2 and 3: calm wind and better uniformity

The second benefit is the absence of wind on most courses at night. The sprinkler pattern stays stable, the overlap is correct and the distribution comes close to the one designed. Daytime irrigation in wind can leave dry strips next to waterlogged ones.

The third is pressure: in the early hours there is usually less demand on the network, which allows working with more stable pressure at the heads. And stable pressure is the basis of reasonable uniformity.

A common example: on fairways with long-range sprinklers, daytime irrigation in a breeze leaves half the strip without the intended depth. At night, in still air, the same installation behaves as designed. It is a free improvement that many courses do not appreciate until they measure the distribution with rain gauges.

Less drift of water onto paths or non-playing areas.

More consistent droplet size.

Better performance from long-range sprinklers.

Greenkeeper checking the course at dawn after night irrigation

Benefits 4 and 5: a free course and lower electricity tariffs

Irrigating with an empty course avoids interfering with play and with the maintenance crew’s work. Nobody gets wet, nobody waits and the greenkeeper does not have to cut the water mid-hole because a group of players arrives.

In addition, at many installations night pumping works out cheaper because of the structure of electricity tariffs. Check your contract, because it is not a universal rule, but it is worth asking the utility company and management whether cheaper time bands exist.

Zero interference with players and staff.

Possible energy savings in lower-demand hours.

More room to spread the volume across sectors.

Risk 1 of night irrigation: wet leaves and disease

The main drawback of night irrigation is that the leaf can stay wet for many hours. If irrigation starts early and the water stays on the turf until morning, it creates conditions that favour certain fungal diseases, especially on greens and in areas with poor air movement.

The solution is to adjust the schedule so that irrigation ends as close to dawn as possible, and to limit the volume to what is strictly necessary. If health problems are detected, consult a licensed technician or adviser and always follow the label and current regulations for any treatment.

Schedule irrigation to finish shortly before dawn.

Avoid long irrigation cycles in shaded areas with poor air circulation.

Monitor dew as well as irrigation.

Golf fairway with water droplets after night irrigation

Risks 2 and 3: invisible breakdowns and over-watering

The second risk is a practical one: at night nobody sees what is happening. A clogged sprinkler, a leak or a head watering in the wrong direction can go for hours, or whole nights, without the crew finding out. By the time it is discovered, the damage is done: waterlogged areas, mud, suffocated turf or wasted water.

The third is over-watering. What is programmed at night tends to be forgotten; without daily observation of the course, irrigation times carry on even if it has rained or evapotranspiration has changed. The result is a saturated soil and turf with short roots.

Check round at dawn after every night irrigation.

Immediate recording of any anomaly.

Weekly readjustment of run times according to weather and soil condition.

How to organise good night irrigation

A well-managed night irrigation system combines three elements: schedules adjusted by sector, systematic check rounds and a record of consumption. You do not need a sophisticated installation; what matters is that each decision leaves a trace and can be reviewed.

Divide the course into sectors with different needs: greens, tee boxes, fairways and rough.

Set irrigation windows close to dawn to limit leaf wetness.

Check the course first thing before the first group goes out.

Compare weekly consumption with the weather and the real condition of the turf.

With these steps, night irrigation stops being an inherited routine and becomes a management tool: efficient, measurable and with a traceability that serves the greenkeeper and management alike.
<rect width="720" height="420" rx="6" class="svg-dark"/><text x="28" y="44" class="svg-tw">Key takeaways</text><line x1="28" y1="58" x2="120" y2="58" class="svg-line2"/><rect x="24" y="76" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="58" y="130.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">1</text><text x="90" y="119" class="svg-c">Watering at night reduces</text><text x="90" y="139" class="svg-c">evaporation and drift</text><rect x="372" y="76" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="406" y="130.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">2</text><text x="438" y="129" class="svg-c">Calm wind improves uniformity</text><rect x="24" y="184" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="58" y="238.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">3</text><text x="90" y="227" class="svg-c">Schedule the end of irrigation</text><text x="90" y="247" class="svg-c">close to dawn</text><rect x="372" y="184" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="406" y="238.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">4</text><text x="438" y="227" class="svg-c">A leaf wet for many hours</text><text x="438" y="247" class="svg-c">favours disease</text><rect x="24" y="292" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="58" y="346.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">5</text><text x="90" y="335" class="svg-c">Check the course every morning</text><text x="90" y="355" class="svg-c">after irrigation</text><rect x="372" y="292" width="336" height="96" rx="4" class="svg-card"/><text x="406" y="346.0" text-anchor="middle" class="svg-n2">6</text><text x="438" y="335" class="svg-c">Adjust run times and record</text><text x="438" y="355" class="svg-c">consumption by sector</text>
Further reading: AEMET.
